WHAT IS HIV?

HOW DOES SOMEONE GET IT?

What is HIV?

HIV, which is short for human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that attacks a body’s immune system. There is currently no cure for HIV, but there are very good treatments and ways to prevent it. If someone has HIV and they don’t know or they don’t get treatment, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) and can even cause death. However, when those who have the virus take HIV medication they can live very healthy and long lives.

How does someone get HIV?

HIV is spread through FIVE body fluids: semen, vaginal fluids, breast milk, blood, and rectal fluids. Someone can get HIV by having sexual contact or sharing needles with someone who has the virus. Mothers can also transmit HIV to their babies during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding.
