WHAT IS THIS PUBLIC DELIBERATION ABOUT?

This deliberation is about minor permission to participate in medical research on HIV.

Medical research studies have had a huge impact on HIV treatment and prevention.  However, many of these studies have focused on people 18 and older. Young people under the age of 18 have high rates of HIV infection but are often left out of research that could keep them from getting HIV.

We have found in our work with teen HIV prevention that many teens do not want to ask their parents for permission to join in this type of research. They worry that their privacy will not be safe or that their parents will say no. On the other hand, parents want to be asked for permission before their child joins.  Researchers do not know what the best way is to protect teens’ privacy in research permission processes.

Participants will be provided with information about teens’ ability to make decisions, youth HIV, and research. Participants will then discuss the issue and come up with ideas to solve this problem.
